We have a different strain of black raspberry that is native to the west coast of the U. S. - Rubus Leucodermis. Different color bark, basically the same berry. There used to be many commercial growers in my area (SW Washington State). Pretty sure they grew the variety native to the eastern U.S. but not certain. The juice was used extensively for "ink" to stamp meat (USDA PRIME, etc.) among other uses. The berries make the most fantastic ice cream , milkshakes, and jam. A flavor thats hard to beat. I've heard that the commercial varieties that were grown in my area started having disease problems so the "industry" kind of died out. The University of Oregon or Oregon State University is studying them for cancer fighting potential. I'm cultivating some in my backyard now and you can find the "wild" ones in the woods. In years gone by many younsters helped earn their school clothes money picking them.

Hey I noticed you didn’t post in a while. I would really like to have a garden that was good for the environment with plants native to the Netherlands but it’s really hard to find information. It might be nice to grow some food in the future but it’s not the most important thing to me right now I just want to get a natural healthy environment going. Do you know some good sources of information in Dutch or English specific to the Netherlands? I hope you are well 😊

I'm Czech as well and have spent a good amount of money collecting a set of heirloom varieties encyclopedias from a century ago ("České ovoce - jablka/hrušky/třešně, slívy, višně a švestky" and so on, the first editions are from 1911 or so, by various authors). Apples are the only fruit that have two books, because of how many there are, and while not all of them are natively Czech varieties, it shows what was popular back then. There's also a book from the late 19th century that focuses solely on heirloom apple varieties, but the print I was able to find was so immensely expensive I didn't buy it ('České ovoce: Díl I. - Jablka" by František Thomayer).

I haven’t tried that and sugar in liqueurs is usually added after the macerating (also in fruit based liqueur)- so not sure how that would affect the result

I bought several varieties four or five years ago but the bushes have hardly grown and just sit there and sulk. Some have died. This surprises me as we have lots of different Lonicera shrubs growing around the garden which thrive, but the Honey berries have never flowered as far as I can see. Certainly not the slightest hint of any fruit. We are on a heavy clay soil (quite alkaline) in France where admittedly lots of things struggle. What are the soil conditions in which yours have prospered? I am tempted to buy some more from the Dutch nursery you recommend but want to get started in the right way if I try again. I have some blueberries which are at least fruiting quite well in containers full of acid compost. What should I do to improve the soil if I am going to succeed with this great sounding fruit?

I have one honeyberry bush in my yard. I know I need another. I do not know whether the one I have is male or female. I am told I need one of each. Is there a way to tell? Or am I best to just get an additional male and female bush. I am looking forward to getting these delicious berries. I live in Southern Alberta, Canada.

I have a question about bug's, fertilization & what can put web into leaves, making them stick together and others have holes? It's annoying. Not certain how to fix it. Also, any advice on why some berries are eaten 1/2 way on honeyberries or leaves are yellow & not all berries form on currants? What should I do? As organic or not as organic, but I think it is affecting one plant extremely much. My goji berries look like they have curly leaf issues. I'm new to bushes. Is there something not enough off or something eating it? We already have leaves, etc. Would be thankful 4 help. In zone 6B I think.
